We do not do personal injury, family law, or criminal defense. We do corporate work for businesses in East Tennessee, which means the problem you bring us is one we have seen in its other variations.
Smith & Smith advises closely held companies in Knoxville and across East Tennessee. Our clients are typically between two and two hundred people: past the stage where the founder handles everything personally, and short of the stage where there is an in-house legal department to call.
That range has a characteristic problem. The company has outgrown the documents it was formed with, but no single issue is urgent enough to force the fix — until a buyer, a bank, a regulator, or a departing owner makes it urgent all at once. Most of what we do is either preventing that moment or working through it.
We are deliberately narrow. A firm that handles everything handles each thing for the first time more often. By staying inside corporate work, the second and third versions of your problem are ones we have already solved, which shows up as speed and as fewer surprises in the fee.
On cost: defined projects are quoted flat, before the work starts. Where hourly billing is genuinely the right structure — a live negotiation, a transaction, a regulatory response — we say so and give you a range up front. You should never learn what something cost by opening the invoice.
Where we work
East Tennessee, primarily.
Our office is in Knoxville. We work with companies throughout the region and handle most matters remotely, so being across the state line or two counties over is rarely the obstacle people expect.
